अल्गार्व, पोर्तुगाल (भाग ३)

जेव्हा तुम्ही युरोपमध्ये फिराल तेव्हा नेहमीची ठिकाणे करून झाल्यावर छोट्या छोट्या गावातून फेरफटका मारण्यासाठी वेळ राखून ठेवा. इकडे तुम्हाला काही बघण्यासाठी रांगेत उभे रहावे लागणार नाही, कोठेही वर्दळ दिसणार नाही, पण निवांतपणा जाणवेल. जुनी वयस्कर माणसे छोट्या छोट्या सुंदर कॅफे मध्ये बसून कॉफी/बियर चा आस्वाद घेताना दिसतील, लहान निर्मनुष्य गल्ल्या तुम्हाला गावचा निवांतपणा अनुभवायला देतील, घराच्या समोरच्या निटनेटक्या, आखीव रेखीव सुंदर बागा तुम्हाला घड्याळ पाहायची उसंतच देणार नाहीत, गावातले लहान पण उत्तम स्थितीत असलेले किल्ले तुम्हाला इतिहासाच्या गोष्टी सांगतील. हे सगळे पोर्तुगालमध्ये फिरताना जाणवते पण युरोपियन शैलीची (लाकडाची), ठराविक साच्याची घरे दिसत नाही. कदाचित पाच शतकांचा अरबांच्या अंमलामुळे येथील घरांवर, गावाच्या नावावर आणि संस्कृतीवर अरब संस्कृतीचा प्रभाव जाणवतो. त्यांनी तो बदलण्याचा किंवा ठिकाणांची नावे बदलण्याची उठाठेव केलेली दिसत नाही. इतिहास म्हणजे भुतकाळातील ओझी वर्तमानकाळात न नेता भविष्यकाळ चांगला करणे. ह्यातच शहाणपण असते.

लहान गावातील घरे ही कोकणातील चिरा ( laterite stone) सदृश्य दगडापासून बनताना दिसली आणि महत्त्वाचे म्हणजे बहुतेक सगळी घरे कौलारू होती. मोठ्या टाउन मधली घरांचा दर्शनी भाग हा Ceramic टाइल्सने सुशोभित केलेला असतो. या टाइल्सना इकडे अझुलेजोस (Azulejos) म्हणतात आणि यांचा चर्च, ट्रेन स्टेशनवर सुद्धा मुबलक वापर केला गेला आहे. या टाइल्समध्ये खूप फुलांचे (बहुतेकवेळा निळ्या) डिज़ाइन केलेले आढळले. या टाइल्स नसतील तर पिवळ्या/निळ्या /पांढऱ्या रंगानी ही घरे न्हाऊन निघालेली असतात.

माळरानावर विहिरी असलेल्या पण कुंपण नसलेल्या, संत्राच्या फळांनी बहरलेल्या बागा तुमच्या मनाला आणि डोळ्यांना उल्हासित करतील यात काहीच शंका नाहीत. आम्हाला त्या बागेतून फिरवासे वाटत होते पण बाग मालकाच्या परवानगीशिवाय फिरणे आम्हाला ईष्ट वाटले नाही. जर कोणी ज्या मेहनतीने बागा निर्माण केल्या आहेत त्या विश्वासाला का तडा जाऊ द्यायचा या प्रेरणेने तिकडे संत्र्याची चोरी होत नसावी कदाचित. इकडे रस्त्याच्या दुभाजकावर, पायऱ्यांचा बाजूला, पठारावर, सगळीकडे छोटी-मोठी संत्रांची झाडे दिसतात आणि भरपूर फळे आली असतात. ती सहज चालता फिरता सहज तोडता येत असतानासुद्धा, ती तोडून नेताना कोणीच दिसत नाही. सगळ्या कॅफेमध्ये ताज्या संत्र्याचा ज्यूसच्या पाट्ट्या लागलेल्या असतात, आणि हा चवीला खूपच अप्रतिम लागतो. मुलीला या चवीची सवय नसल्याने मी प्रत्येकवेळी तो मागवून मीच संपवायचो.

यावेळी रिसोर्टच्या जेवणाने खूपच निराश केले पण सुदैवाने आम्ही हाफ बोर्ड घेतले होते. त्यामुळे स्थानिक कॅफे आणि रेस्टोरेंट ट्राय करता आले. रिसॉर्टमध्ये राहणाऱ्या ब्रिटीश पर्यटकाने जवळ असलेले इटालियन कॅफे जेवणासाठी सुचवले. म्हणून सॅन मार्टिनोमध्ये ख्रिसमसच्या दिवशी गेलो. बाल्कनी मधून दिसणाऱ्या सूर्य, वाळू आणि समुद्र च्या त्रिवेणी संगमाने मन आणि अस्सल इटालियन पिझ्झा, पास्ताने पोट चांगलेच तृप्त केले. तुम्हाला जर पिझ्झा हट किंवा डॉमिनोज सारख्या डुप्लिकेट इटालियन फ़ूड चेनची सवय असेल तर तुम्हाला अस्सल इटालियन पदार्थ कदाचित वेगळी लागेल. इकडे जेवण देताना पेरी पेरी सॉसची छोटीशी बाटली देतात आणि खरोखर हा तिखट सॉस जेवणाला लज्जत आणतो.

तविरा - हे मच्छीमारांचे गाव म्हणून ओळखले जाते. ओल्ड टाउनच्या रस्त्यावर तुरळक आमच्यासारखी प्रवासाची आयटेनरी न बनवणारी लोक फिरत होती. आम्ही ख्रिसमस ईव ला गेल्यामुळे सगळेच बंद होते, परंतु Little India नावाचे रेस्टोरेंट उघडे होते. सुदैवाने आम्ही शेवटचे कस्टमर असल्यामुळे आम्हाला जेवण मिळाले.

अल्बुफेअरा - जरी हे समुद्र किनाऱ्यासाठी ओळखले जात असले तरी ओल्ड टाउन मध्ये भरपूर रेस्टोरेंट आणि कॅफे असून भरपूर वर्दळ असलेले मोठे गाव आहे. माझ्यामते ही सर्वोत्तम अशी जागा आहे जिकडे तुम्ही राहून आजूबाजूची गावे बघू शकता. फारो एयरपोर्ट ४० मिनिटच्या अंतरावर आहे. आम्हाचे तीन दिवसच हे गाव बघण्यात गेले.

सिल्व्हेस - हे एक छोटेसे टुमदार, कमी वर्दळीचे, पांढऱ्या रंगाचे गाव असून मध्यभागी उंचावर किल्ला आहे.

अल्टे - अल्बुफेअरावरून या गावी येणारा छोटासा रोड तुम्हाला आयुष्यभरच्या आठवणी देऊन जाईल. हे पिटुकले गाव धबधबा आणि गरम पाण्याच्या कुंडासाठी ओळखलं जाते. आम्ही चर्चच्या समोरच्या कॅफे मध्ये fonte Nova स्थानिक फ़ूड घेतले.

मोणचिक- हे अल्गार्व मधले सर्वात उंचावरचे गाव. सिल्व्हेस ते मोणचिक हा रस्ता मला पोलादपूर ते महाबळेश्वरची आठवण देऊन गेला. याचा वीडियो मी पहिल्या भागात टाकला आहे. हे एक महाबळेश्वर किंवा ऊटी किंवा मुन्नार आपण म्हणू शकतो.

ओल्हवो, लागोस, लौले ही गावे आम्हाला वेळेअभावी करता आली नाहीत.

Algarve, Portugal (Part 3)

When you travel through Europe, always take the time to explore small villages off the beaten path. Here, you won't find prominent landmarks, but you'll experience authenticity. Old folks sitting in quaint cafes, sipping coffee or beer, will give you a glimpse into village life. Narrow, cobblestone streets, beautifully maintained front gardens will give you a sense of the tranquility of the village. Small yet well-preserved forts in picturesque locations will narrate stories of history. While these aspects are common throughout Portugal, however, the European style wooden house are missing. Perhaps five centuries of Arab rule has influenced the houses, village name and culture of Portugal. Portuguees don't seem to have bothered to change it or change the names of the places. History is about improving the future without bringing the past into the present.

In small villages, houses built with laterite stones, similar to Konkan's 'chira,' are a common sight. I noticed that these houses have roofs similar to typical Konkani old houses.. In towns, you'll find homes adorned with beautifully crafted ceramic tiles. Locally known as 'Azulejos,' these tiles, with intricate floral designs, are often used in churches, Palaces and train stations. Otherise yellow is colour you see everywhere in Portugal.

There is no doubt that when you see orchards blooming with oranges and big wells, will delight your mind and eyes. Though we were tempted to wander through those gardens, we couldn't explore them without the owner's permission. I was a bit surprised when there were no fense or restrictions around the orchards. Along the roadside, on the side of the stairs, on the plateau, all around, small and large orange fruit-bearing trees are visible, and abundantly laden with fruits. In all the cafes, you'll find refreshing juices made from fresh fruits, and this taste is truly exquisite.

During this time, the resort's dining left us a bit disappointed, but thankfully, we had opted for half board. Due to this, we explored local cafes and tried restaurants. The British tourist staying at the resort recommended us an Italian cafe for meals. So, on Christmas day, we went. The view from the balcony (combination of Sun-Sand-Beach), creating a delightful atmosphere. We enjoyed authentic Italian pizza and pasta, satisfying our taste buds. If you prefer pizza hut or Domino's style dummy Italian food chains, You may find authentic Italian cuisine different. Here, with every meal, they provide a small bottle of peri-peri sauce, and truly, this spicy sauce adds a unique flavor to the meal.

Tavira - The village is known as the fishermen's village. Since we went on Christmas Eve, everything was closed, but the restaurant named Little India was open, and it was about to close. Fortunately, we became their last customers, so we got our meal.

Albufeira - Although it is recognized for the coastline, it is a large village and the Old Town filled with numerous restaurants and cafes. In my opinion, this is the best place where you can stay and explore the nearby villages. The Faro Airport is within a 40-minute distance. We spent three days exploring this village.

Silves - This is a small, quaint village, featuring a castle perched on a hill in the central part.

Alte - The tiny road coming from Albufeira will take you on a nostalgic journey, leaving you with memories for a lifetime. Alte is famous mostly for its natural features, the water springs and waterfall. We enjoyed local cuisine at Fonte Nova, a cafe near the church.

Monchique - Here you will find the highest point on the Algarve. The road from Silves to Monchique reminded me of Poladpur to Mahabaleshwar Scenic Drive. I have included this video in the first part. You can think of it as Mahabaleshwar, Ooty, or Munnar. Fóia is the highest mountain of Algarve, Portugal. It is part of the Serra de Monchique range.

We could not do Olhão, Lagos, Loulé villages due to lack of time.
