अल्गार्व, पोर्तुगाल (भाग १)

जश्या नाताळच्या सुट्ट्या जवळ येतात तसे इंग्लंडवासीयांना हिवाळी सूर्य सुट्ट्याचे (विंटर सन हॉलिडे) वेध लागतात. जिकड़े सूर्य,ऊन, समुद्रकिनारे मुबलक आहेत त्या स्पेन, स्पैनिश केनेरी आइलैंड, पोर्तुगाल ला जाणारी बुकिंग्स ३/४ महिने आधीच फुल होऊन जातात. ह्या सुट्ट्या खरोखरच “हॉलिडे” असतात, त्या Eat-Sleep-Eat Repeat या प्रकारात मोडतात. लहान मुले असलेल्या कुटुंबासाठी दगदगीच्या जीवनापासून एका आठवड्यासाठी मुक्तीच असते, ज्यामध्ये प्रवासाचा कार्यक्रम बनवण्याची गरज पडत नाही. एकदा बुकिंगचे पैसे भरले की प्रवासी कंपनी विमान बुकिंग, एयरपोर्ट ट्रान्सफर, हॉटेलची व्यवस्थित काळजी घेतात.

अल्गार्व हा प्रांत पोर्तुगालच्या दक्षिण भागात येतो आणि यामध्ये लागोस, तविरा, अल्बुफेअरा, ओल्हवो, सिल्व्हेस, लौले सारख्या सुंदर गावांचा समावेश होतो. पहिला युरोपियन पोर्तुगीज वास्को ड गामा ज्याने युरोप मधून भारतात पोहचण्याचा समुद्र मार्ग़ शोधून काढला त्यामुळेच कदाचित पोर्तुगीज भाषेचा प्रभाव दक्षिण भारतीय आणि मराठी भाषांवर खूप दिसून आला. भारतीय भाषेचे काही शब्द पोर्तुगीज भाषेमध्ये समाविष्ट झाले आहेत. आमची सुरवात बटाटा, अननस, नाताळ या पोर्तुगीज शब्दाने झाली. पगार, पाद्री, पाव, चावी, इंग्रजी, फालतू असे अनेक पोर्तुगीज शब्द मराठी भाषेत आले आहेत. पण यावेळी विमानतळावरुन रिसॉर्टला जाणाऱ्या बसचे भाडे खूपच महाग असल्याने कार चा पर्याय निवडला आणि आमचे म्हणजे माझे हॉलिडे एडवेंचर ट्रेवल झाले. परंतु कार मुळेच सुंदर गावे बघता आली. जेव्हा आम्ही आमची भाड्याची कार निवडायला गेलो तेव्हा एजेंटने माझे आडनाव व्यवस्थित उच्चारून मला चांगलाच आश्चर्यचा धक्का दिला. त्याने पोर्तुगीज आणि ब्रिटीश लोक एकच आडनाव कसे उच्चार करतील याच्या नक्कला देखील करुन दाखवल्या. मागच्या पॅरिस ट्रिपच्या अनुभवामुळे युरोप मध्ये कार ड्राइव चा आत्मविश्वास आला होता. परंतु यावेळी माझी कार न घेता पहिल्यांदा डाव्या बाजूला स्टीअरिंग व्हील असलेली गाडी चालवणार होतो, त्यामुळे थोडी धाकधूक होती. सगळे कागदी सोपस्कार पार पाडल्यावर मुलीने चाइल्ड सीट मऊदार नसल्याची तक्रार चालू केली आणि मी माझ्या जुन्या काळात गेलो. आम्ही कसा “येष्टीने” (महाराष्ट्र स्टेट ट्रांसपोर्ट बस) १२-१५ तास पत्राच्या सीट वर बसून कोकणात कसा प्रवास केला हे सांगण्यात माझी १५/२० मिनिटे गेली. अनेक मिन्नतवारीनंतर मॅडम राजी झाल्या ४० मिनिटांचा प्रवास रिसोर्टपर्यंत करण्यासाठी. हुश्श..

Algarve, Portugal (Part 1)

As the Christmas holidays approach, English people look forward to the Winter Sun Holiday. Where the sun, sand, and sea meet, places like Spain, the Spanish Canary Islands, and Portugal get fully booked three to four months in advance. These vacations are truly a "holiday," where people indulge in the Eat-Sleep-Eat Repeat mode. For families with kids, it's a week of freedom from the hustle and bustle of daily life, with no need to plan a travel itinerary in advance. Once the booking is made, travel companies take care of flight bookings, airport transfers, and hotel arrangements.

Algarve is a region in the southern part of Portugal, including beautiful villages like Lagos, Tavira, Albufeira, Olhão, Silves, and Loulé. The first European Vasco da Gama, who discovered the sea route from Europe to India, was Portuguese, and perhaps this is why Portuguese influence is evident in South Indian and Marathi languages. Many words from Portuguese have been incorporated into Marathi, starting with Batata (potatoes), Ananas (pineapple), and Natal (Christmas). Words like Pagar (salary), Padri (priest), Pao (Bread), and Chavi (Key) have also found a place in Marathi. However, since the resort bus fares were exorbitant, we chose the option of renting a car, and our holiday turned into a personalized adventure trip. But the beautiful villages could be seen only because of the car. When we went to pick up our rental car, the agent surprised me by pronouncing my last name correctly. He also mimicked how the Portuguese and British people pronounce the same surnames differently. My previous experience of driving in Paris boosted my confidence in driving in Europe. However, this time, manoeuvring the car with the steering wheel on the left side was a bit nerve-wracking. After completing all the paperwork, my daughter complained about the hardness of the child seat. I remembered my journeys in the "ST" (Maharashtra State Transport Bus), sitting on a sheet metal seat with no cushion and no Air con for 12-15 hours to travel to Konkan. After several pleadings, little madam reluctantly agreed to cover the 40-minute journey to the resort. Phew!--
